What are the benefits of artificial sweetener aspartame?

One of the main benefits of using aspartame as a sweetener is that it is low in calories and does not contribute to tooth decay. As a result, it is often used as a sugar substitute in products that are marketed as low-calorie or sugar-free. It is also commonly used in products for individuals with diabetes, as it does not affect blood sugar levels.

Many benefits are: Unique sugar taste; no bad taste; made from protein building blocks; naturally digested and metabolized; low in calories; gentle on teeth; approved by health and regulatory authorities in over 130 countries; excellent performance in blends with sugar, other low-calorie sweeteners and flavors; suitable for use in a wide range of product categories; very low environmental impact

Is artificial sweetener aspartame safe?

Aspartame has a history of over 35 years of use and is one of the most tested ingredients in our food supply. It has been approved by health and regulatory authorities in over 130 countries. Artificial sweetener aspartame is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States. The FDA has determined that aspartame is safe for use in food and beverage products, provided that it is used within specific limits. As a result, aspartame is allowed to be used in a wide range of products, including soft drinks, candy, and baked goods.

In addition, Health Canada, COFEPRIS, Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), World Health Organization (WHO), the Scientific Committee for Food (SCF) of the European Union and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have also approved the use of artificial sweetener aspartame.

The ADI represents the safe level of consumption of an ingredient on average per day over a person’s lifetime. It is expressed in milligrams per kilogram of body weight. The ADI for artificial sweetener aspartame has been set at 40 mg per kg of body weight. To put this in perspective, in a single day an adult weighing 70 Kg (154 lb) would need to consume 97 packets of tabletop sweetener or 7 liters of a diet soft drink to reach aspartame’s ADI.
